The legend of the annual return of the buzzards (turkey vultures) to Buzzard Roost in the Cleveland Metroparks goes back nearly a century in Hinckley history.

Legend has it that they were first attracted by the tons of butchering refuse and unwanted game left behind in the great Hinckley Hunt of 1818, but additional historical research among the records of the Sylvester Library of Medina uncovered an old manuscript by William Coggswell, who as a youth with his uncle, Gibson Gates, were the first white men to set foot in the township in 1810. Walter A. Robb, Jr. was born in Hinckley on September 1, 1930. Walter's father, Walter A. Robb, Sr. moved to Hinckley in 1922 and started a family. He had four sons, Richard, Ramon, Herbert and Walter Jr. They lived on a 13-acre property on River Road raising farm animals. The Robb Family community involvement began when Walter, Sr. became a charter member of the Hinckley Fire Department and the First Township Zoning Inspector. She was born in Hinckley, Ohio on May 30, 1920. She grew up on a farm located on Ridge Road with her parents, Melvin and Sadie Case. This home site is now the Estates of Ridgemont. Later in her childhood she moved and resided on a farm on River Road. This site is now Westwind Farms Subdivision. On the day she was born, Melvin told people they flew the American flag in honor of the birth of their daughter, LaVerne.

She attended and graduated from Hinckley High School. While in school she participated in the Hinckley town band, playing the clarinet.

John Ascherl, Sr. was selected as the 2007 Hinckley Citizen of the Year with an official proclamation made at the May 14, 2007 Hinckley Trustee Meeting. Citizen of the Year Chairman and Trustee Ray Schulte, made the official announcement with a formal dedication to follow the Memorial Day Parade. Ascherl was unanimously approved by the 11 member Citizen of the Year committee in March. John has lived in Hinckley for over 40 years where he has raised his family, owned a business and contributed enormously to the activities and organizations of Hinckley Township.
